College of Letters and Science Impacted Course Drop Policy

Impacted courses may not be dropped after the second week of a term for other than exceptionally extenuating circumstances. Exceptionally extenuating circumstances do not include circumstances of short duration where other alternatives exist, including but not limited to a late drop of other (nonimpacted) courses or taking an Incomplete in the impacted course.

Before dropping an impacted course, consult the course instructor and explore academic options other than dropping the impacted course. To drop an impacted course, pick up a Late Impacted Course Drop Petition or Retroactive Drop Petition form from a Letters and Science counseling unit:

  • College Academic Counseling, A316 Murphy Hall
  • Honors Programs Office, A311 Murphy Hall
  • AAP Counseling Office, 1209 Campbell Hall
  • Athletic Counseling Office, Morgan Center

Follow the instructions on the form. A detailed explanation of the reason for dropping the course must be given, and the course instructor’s signature must be obtained. Requests to drop an impacted course are referred to a subcommittee of the College of Letters and Science Faculty Executive Committee by College counseling units. If the request is approved, the dropped course appears on the transcript with a notation indicating the date and week of the term in which the drop was filed with the College.
