adult   Any person who is 18 years of age or older.

California resident parent   A U.S. citizen, permanent resident, eligible alien, or other immigrant who is the natural or adoptive father or mother who meets the UC requirement for residence. This person is financially independent and has been present in California for a minimum of 366 days with the intent to make California his or her permanent residence, and has manifested that intent by abandoning all residential ties with the former state of residence and establishing those ties with California. The term "parent" does not include stepparents unless expressly noted.

eligible alien   A noncitizen whose immigration status allows him or her to establish a domicile in the U.S. Includes those holding valid visa types A, E, H-1, H-4, I, K, L, O-1, O-3, and R.

financial independence   The ability to demonstrate self-support by meeting various requirements and providing certain documentation, for residence for tuition purposes.

intent   Demonstrable establishment of ties to the state of California with respect to making California the state of permanent residence.

nonimmigrant alien   A person admitted to the U.S. for a temporary period of time and for a specific purpose. Resident status is not available to aliens whose presence in California is solely for educaltional purpose, or to those aliens who hold the following visa types: B-1, B-2, C, D-1, D-2, F-1, F-2, H-2, H-3, J-1, J-2, M-1, M-2, O-2, P, Q, TN, and TD NAFTA.

physical presence   The act necessary to establish residence in California. Residence may not be established in absentia.

residence determination date (RDD)   For the eight UC campuses on the quarter system, the day instruction begins at the last of the campuses to open for the term.
