Course Materials Fees

The College of Letters and Science and the UCLA professional schools assess course materials fees to cover the cost of equipment and to help offset the costs of providing course websites and computer laboratories. Depending on how the fees were approved, they are assessed with registration fees or after Friday of the fourth week of the quarter.

The Materials Use fee (sometimes known as a lab fee) and Instructional Enhancement Initiative (IEI) fee are course materials fees that are assessed by course unit at the end of the fourth week of the quarter. Students are responsible for ensuring that all Study List errors and omissions are corrected prior to the end of the second week. Students are assessed these fees regardless of major. Students who are approved for “Late Add” enrollment after the third week of classes are required to pay course material fees. The fees are billed once a quarter through BAR and are non-refundable once assessed.

Education Abroad Program reciprocity students and CAPPP (Washington Internship) students are exempt from the IEI fee. For more information about the IEI fee, see the UCLA Online section of the Schedule. For a listing of fee amounts, see the Miscellaneous Fee chart in the Fees section of the Schedule.
